LSC Board to Meet in Montana

TO ALL:

I wanted to share with all of you some very exciting news, the faint
rumors of which I had mentioned to those staff attending the Equal
Justice Conference: The national Legal Services Corporation Board has
chosen Montana as the site of its September Board Meeting! It is now
official. I presume most of you know such a Montana meeting has never
occurred in the history of LSC. After some consultation with Helaine
Barnett, LSC president, we have chosen Helena as the site of the LSC
board meeting.

Helaine shared with me several reasons for their choice of Montana as
the Board site. First, the LSC board has never been to Montana before.
Second, the board's current philosophy is to use these meetings to
educate themselves about LSC grantees. And third, LSC likes what it
sees happening at MLSA and they want to know how we did it.

I am sure you can all understand that is both exciting and onerous to
have them visit Montana. Not only will we have the opportunity to
showcase what we do and how we do it, but we will also all have the
myriad of logistical problems attendant with the Board's presence. Some
of you may be asked to participate in presentations to the Board on or
about September 10th.

Thanks to those of you who were able to attend the Equal Justice
Conference in Helena last Friday. Preliminary examination of the
evaluations indicates this was another successful conference. The
Missoulian coverage in Saturday's paper highlighted both the
presentations by Stuart Rossman and the Supreme Court candidates panel
in the afternoon. Planning for the next conference in June of 2005 in
Billings is already under way.

Finally, just a note to staff about the MLSA Board Meeting. The MLSA
board conducted its first planning retreat since the '96 cutbacks this
past Saturday. Beki Brandborg facilitated an excellent session with 10
of our 15 board members. The most surprising result was that the Board
wanted longer meetings, with more of their personal involvement! There
will be much, much follow up, of course, to that meeting.

We will keep you posted on additional news about the events.
