LSC Board of Directors Will Request More Federal Funding for FY 2007

Tuesday, November 15, 2005

  • Organization: The Brennan Center
At its October 29th meeting in Boise, Idaho, the LSC Board of Directors approved a FY 2007 budget request to Congress in the amount of nearly $412 million, or $48 million more than it requested in FY 2006. The higher request reflects an effort to narrow the vast justice gap documented by LSC's recent report, "Documenting the Justice Gap in America." The report revealed that at least four in five low-income Americans are unable to receive the representation they need in critical civil cases. LSC President Helaine Barnett says, "We are asking Congress to help us close the justice gap in America. . . [and we] are seeking to close the gap in measured steps over the next five years."
